Bruno Walpoth

[show_filter]

Bruno Walpoth’s people made of lime or walnut wood are created in the encounter and confrontation with models. On a scale of 1:1, the bodies, the lines and the forms of the few young gaunt men and many beautiful women are carved out of the block of wood. Even though Walpoth is attracted by the concrete reproduction of body parts, such as a shoulder or an ankle, and a good success gives him satisfaction, he is not interested in creating a hyper-realistic image of the people standing before him: The model’s outward appearance serves as a shell for implied projections. The facial features and body shapes correspond to those of the models, but Bruno Walpoth takes back strong characteristic features of the personality – which in the classical sense of the portrait stand for individuality – in his sculptural imitation.
