Katrin Bremermann – Je rêve un jardin
The new exhibition by Berlin-based artist Katrin Bremermann once again brings together various groups of works from within her artistic universe.
The French title (Katrin lived in Paris for many years and now has her second home in France again) “Ich träume einen Garten” (I dream a garden) can perhaps be applied to her work in the sense that her highly distinctive formal language in her objects, collages and paintings has developed almost organically over the years. It continues to grow, building on older forms and repeatedly producing intoxicatingly beautiful new blossoms.
One of these newer developments is the collages in steel frames, into which Bremermann sometimes incorporates forms that she previously used as stencils for her lacquer paintings or as printing blocks for her hand-printed works.
However, she also exhibits large-scale canvas works that follow in the tradition of the ‘shaped canvas’ artists of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis. Yet these artists represent only part of the fertile ground from which Katrin’s work springs, drawn from the broad field of geometric abstraction. Many other developments from the fields of Constructivism and Minimalism can be felt in Bremermann’s work, but none of them is dominant, and all serve merely as a backdrop for her fascinating art.
Just as in a garden, the small framed lacquer paintings on a wax layer – which have formed the foundation of Katrin’s universe of forms and colours for many years – together with the collages and the large, powerful, and imposing canvas objects, form a harmonious whole. This allows for numerous interconnections in colour and form, transforming the gallery space into a magnificent garden of art.
