Peer Kriesel – Update II
Following the first solo exhibition by Berlin artist Peer Kriesel, which we showed at the gallery in 2022, the second ‘update’ now follows.
Peer has continued to develop his various groups of works in parallel and has also added completely new elements. We are showing examples of his new large-format paintings on canvas, which have evolved from smaller works on paper. In these pictures, Peer Kriesel’s typical swarm of figures, grimaces or animal forms develop in front of a dark blue pictorial space that is reminiscent of a view into space. Structured by geometric shapes (circles, triangles …) or lines that connect or separate certain areas, the figures seem to float in front of this bright blue cosmos.
The group of collages is also new in his oeuvre and takes up a large part of his current work. In these works, he combines parts of packaging (e.g. Nike shoe boxes) with historical copperplate engravings, areas of colour and his figures. Modern advertising aesthetics meet reproductions of artworks from the past and something completely new is created in combination with Kriesel’s worlds of figures. One is reminded of the pioneers of the collage technique such as Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters or Hannah Höch, who also combined historical elements with animals, plants and forms from their contemporary surroundings to create new surreal worlds.
The basic theme in Peer Kriesel’s work – the mass of figures as a symbol of the flood of information and images in our environment, both in the real world and in the daily reality of the World Wide Web and social media in particular – remains intact and forms the basis of his work.
Exhibition: 07. 03. until 26.04. 2025
